Recovering Gold from Rock Crusher PC Boards
Rock crusher PC boards often contain traces of gold, primarily in the form of plating or connectors. Extracting this gold requires a systematic approach to ensure both safety and efficiency. The process involves several steps, including dismantling, chemical treatment, and refining.

Step 1: Dismantling and Sorting
Before any chemical processing, the PC boards must be carefully dismantled. Remove any non-metallic components, as they do not contain gold. Focus on connectors, pins, and areas with visible gold plating. Sorting these components separately improves the efficiency of subsequent steps.

Step 2: Stripping Gold with Acid Solutions
The most common method for gold recovery involves using acid solutions. A mixture of hydrochloric acid (HCl) and hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), known as the “aqua regia” method, is often employed. Soak the gold-plated components in this solution to dissolve the gold. Ensure proper ventilation and safety gear, as the fumes are toxic.
Step 3: Precipitating the Gold
Once the gold is dissolved, a precipitating agent such as sodium metabisulfite is added to the solution. This causes the gold to separate from the liquid and form a sediment. Filter the solution to collect the gold particles, which will appear as a brown sludge.
Step 4: Refining the Gold
The collected gold sludge still contains impurities. To purify it, melt the gold using a crucible and a high-temperature torch. Add borax to remove remaining contaminants. The result should be a small but valuable lump of pure gold.
Safety Considerations
Working with acids and high temperatures requires extreme caution. Always use protective equipment, including gloves, goggles, and a fume hood. Proper disposal of chemical waste is also crucial to avoid environmental harm.
While the amount of gold recovered from rock crusher PC boards may be small, the process can be profitable if done on a larger scale. Always research local regulations regarding precious metal recovery to ensure compliance with legal standards.
