The production of crushed stone sand involves a series of well-coordinated processes to transform raw stone into high-quality construction sand. This material is widely used in concrete, asphalt, and road base applications due to its excellent gradation and durability. 1. Raw Material Preparation
The process begins with the extraction of large rocks from quarries or mines. These rocks are transported to the primary crusher via dump trucks or loaders. Proper sizing of the raw material is crucial to ensure efficient crushing and minimize wear on downstream equipment.

2. Primary Crushing
Large rocks are fed into a primary jaw crusher or gyratory crusher, which reduces them to smaller, manageable sizes. The primary crusher delivers coarse aggregates ranging from 150mm to 300mm in diameter. This stage is critical for achieving uniform feed material for subsequent processing.
3. Secondary and Tertiary Crushing
The coarsely crushed stones are then conveyed to secondary cone crushers or impact crushers for further reduction. Tertiary crushing may be employed using vertical shaft impactors (VSIs) or fine cone crushers to produce smaller particles closer to sand size (0-5mm).

4. Screening and Grading
After crushing, the material passes through vibrating screens to separate it into different sizes. Oversized particles are recirculated back into the crushers, while properly sized aggregates proceed to the next stage. Screening ensures precise gradation control for optimal sand quality.
5. Sand Making Process (Optional)
For finer sand production, a sand maker (VSI crusher) is often used to shape crushed particles into cubical grains with smooth surfaces—ideal for enhancing concrete workability and strength. This step improves particle shape and reduces flakiness for better compaction properties.
6. Washing and Dewatering
To remove excess dust, clay, or impurities, crushed stone sand may undergo washing using screw classifiers or log washers. Dewatering screens or hydrocyclones then reduce moisture content before final stockpiling or packaging. Clean sand improves bonding in cement mixtures and meets industry standards like ASTM C33 or EN 12620 specifications.
